Established in July 1977 in Landeiro, Vila Nova de Famalicão, place which gave the company its name, Carnes Landeiro started as a pig slaughterhouse and evolved into a modern industrial unit, which brings together slaughter lines for pigs and cattle, cutting and boning lines, and a meat processing unit, where all meat products from the wide range of traditional Portuguese offer are produced. Carnes Landeiro also comprises a logistics unit that operationally covers the entire national territory, and still supports the export of its products.
This was the result of a strategic planning process of the company, that intended to meet the growing demand for its products and the desire to improve their production conditions. Our new industrial unit, located in Silveiros, Barcelos, was completed in 1992 and afforded Carnes Landeiro the most developed equipment and systems, ensuring that the company would rank amongst the best companies in Europe in this sector.
The tight control of all its raw materials is a constant concern of Carnes Landeiro, which values the quality of its products. The integrated Quality Management system, Food Safety Management and Environmental Management of Carnes Landeiro, was established in 2003 and aims primarily to ensure compliance of company processes with the ISO 22000 standard, ensuring the conformity of products with applicable standards and specifications.
The satisfaction of our customers is our priority.
Joaquim Novais de Carvalho, the family patriarch, was a livestock dealer who, along with his sons Artur Carvalho, Abílio Carvalho and José Carvalho, formed a partnership to expand the business. As a result, in July 1977 in Landeiro, Nine, Vila Nova de Famalicão a swine slaughterhouse was created with the purpose of exclusively satisfying the commercial needs of the population.
While the market gradually increased its demands, legislation also increased the requirements so that these slaughter and meat processing units could match the rest of Europe. This whole situation led the company to rethink its strategy, having decided for the construction of a modern slaughter unit.
The old Landeiro place could no longer withhold a project of such dimension; therefore the choice for the locality of Silveiros in Barcelos was made. The original name was kept, however, hence the name “Carnes Landeiro” Joaquim Carvalho & Sons, Ltd.
The new unit, approved in accordance with the rules in force, started operating as it is today in 1992. On 4 October 1999, for logistical reasons, the company acquired the name that remains until today – “Carnes Landeiro, S.A.”.

Agro Landeiro S.A.
The rigorous selection of raw materials is taken to the extreme in terms of beef, since most of the meat sold by Carnes Landeiro comes from their own farm.
Founded in 1996, Agro Landeiro (group company) is a farm of about 30 hectares, which produces fodder for the fattening off about 700 cattle, essentially the Charolesa breed acquired from Alentejo farmers. This farm allows Carnes Landeiro to have an even more integrated production, ensuring full control and quality of its raw material.
